Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum is located in Emirgan, one of the oldest settlements on the Bosphorus in Istanbul. The villa, which is the museum's main building, was commissioned in 1927 by Prince Mehmed Ali Hasan of the Egyptian Khedive family to the Italian architect Edouard De Nari, and was used for many years as a summer residence by various members of the Khedive family, and for a short time also served as the Montenegro Embassy. The mansion, purchased in 1951 by the Adana industrialist Hacı Ömer Sabancı from Princess İffet, a member of the Khedive family, began to be known as the "Atlı Köşk" because of the 1864 horse statue by the French sculptor Louis Doumas, which was purchased in the same year and placed in front of it. The second horse statue on the grounds of Atlı Köşk is a cast of one of the 4 horses that was taken from Istanbul Sultanahmet Square, looted by the Crusader forces during the 4th Crusade in 1204, and placed in front of Venice's San Marco church.

After the death of Hacı Ömer Sabancı in 1966, Atlı Köşk, which began to be used as a permanent residence by Sakıp Sabancı, the elder of the family, housed Sakıp Sabancı's rich collection of calligraphy and paintings for many years, and in 1998 was allocated to Sabancı University to be transformed into a museum with the collection and furnishings inside. With the addition of a modern gallery, the Museum was opened to visitors in 2002, and its exhibition areas were expanded with the 2005 arrangement, reaching international standards at the technical level. Today, Sabancı University Sakıp Sabancı Museum offers a multifaceted museum environment with its rich collection, the extensive international temporary exhibitions it hosts, conservation units, exemplary educational programs, and the various concerts, conferences and seminars held there.
