The house where the poet Tevfik Fikret lived between 1906-1915 serves as Aşiyan Museum. It was purchased in 1940 from his wife Nazime Hanım by the Istanbul Municipality and opened in 1945 as the Edebiyat-ı Cedide Museum. His remains, which had previously been in the Eyüp cemetery, were transferred in 1961 to this garden, whose natural appearance he admired very much, and after this date the museum took the name "Aşiyan Museum."
Tevfik Fikret drew the plans of his house himself and gave it the name aşiyan, a Persian word meaning "nest."
Aşiyan Museum Sections
Aşiyan Museum, which is a 3-storey wooden building within the garden, has a ground floor that is used today for administrative work. On the first floor are the Edebiyat-ı Cedide Room, where photographs, books and personal belongings of the Edebiyat-ı Cedide writers are exhibited; the Abdülhak Hamit Hall, where personal belongings, paintings, photographs, a desk and armchairs belonging to Abdülhak Hamit are found; and the Poet Nigar Hanım Room, where books, photographs, paintings, personal archive and belongings of one of our women poets, Nigar Hanım, are exhibited. On the second floor, which is reserved for Tevfik Fikret, are the poet's bedroom and study. In the room that he used as a bedroom during the years he lived there, objects such as his personal belongings, the bed in which he died, and a copy of the mask taken from the poet's face by Mihri Hanım are exhibited. In the room he used as a study are his desk and chair, paintings made by himself, and pictures. The famous "Sis" painting made by Şehzade Abdülmecit Efendi inspired by Tevfik Fikret's poem "Sis" is also here.
