Hisarlar Museum; encompasses Rumelihisarı, Yedikulehisarı and Anadoluhisarı. Rumeli Hisarı, located within the borders of Istanbul's Sarıyer District, was commissioned by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1452. The purpose of building the fortress was to prevent aid that could come to the city from the north of the strait during the siege of Istanbul and to block possible attacks.

Built directly opposite Anadolu Hisarı in as short a time as four months, Rumeli Hisarı covers an area of 30 dönüms and consists of three large towers and ramparts. The timber used in its construction was obtained from İzmit and Karadeniz Ereğlisi, the stones from various parts of Anatolia, and the spolia (reused stone pieces) from ruined Byzantine structures in the vicinity.
