The fortress in the Sarıyer district that gave its name to the neighborhood on the Bosphorus where it is located. It was commissioned by Fatih Sultan Mehmet before the conquest of Istanbul, directly opposite Anadolu Hisarı on the Anatolian side, in order to prevent attacks that could come from the north of the strait. This is the narrowest point of the strait.

Rumeli Hisarı is a castle and museum in Istanbul's Sarıyer district on the Bosphorus. Built in 1451 by Mehmed II, it stands at the narrowest point of the strait, opposite Anadolu Hisarı. The medieval Ottoman structure is designed in Ottoman architectural style and also gives its name to the surrounding neighborhood.
