Aynı durum Osmanlılar için de söz konusuydu. Karşı sahilde, İstanbul'un Avrupa yakasında bulunan Rumeli Hisarı ise, 1451-1452 yılları arasında II. Mehmedtarafından, bu yabancı ülkelerin gemilerinin geçişlerini denetim altında tutabilmek amacıyla inşa ettirilmiştir. Fatih Sultan Mehmed, Rumeli Hisarı'nı yaptırırken bu kaleye dış surlar ekletmiştir.
