Sultan II.Selim tarafından 16. yüzyılın başlarında inşa ettirilen sinagog İbranice “kovulmuş” anlamına gelen Geruş adını taşımaktadır. Sultan II. Selimİspanya’dan ayrılmak zorunda kalan Musevileri Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’na kabul etmiş ve iskanlarını sağlamıştır. İlk kafilelerin bir bölümü Bursa’ya yerleştirilmiştir. Musevilerin ibadetlerini özgürce yapmaları için yapılan dikdörtgen planlı sinagog, kesme taştan inşa edilmiştir.
