Geruş Sinagogu

The synagogue, commissioned by Sultan II.Selim in the early 16th century, bears the name Geruş, which means “expelled” in Hebrew. Sultan II. Selim accepted into the Ottoman Empire the Jews who had been forced to leave Spain and ensured their settlement. Some of the first groups were settled in Bursa. The rectangular-plan synagogue, built so that Jews could worship freely, was constructed of cut stone.
