Various sources state that the Sultan Camisi, which I.Murad Hüdavendigar had built in 1365 directly opposite the palace inside the Hisar, took the name Şahadet Camisi after the Sultan was martyred in Kosovo in 1389. Şahadet Camisi was rebuilt in 1892 by Governor Mahmud Celaleddin on the earthquake ruins in a form quite different from the old one, consisting only of the central nave.
