İstanbul adalarının en büyüğü ve belki de en güzeli olan Büyükada'nın en yüksek tepesinde, halk arasında Aya Yorgi adı ile bilinen, Agios Georgios Rum Ortodoks Manastın bulunmaktadır. Bu manastır, adını M.S. III.asırda, Hristiyan inancından dolayı putperestler tarafından şehit edilen ve bugün mezarı Filistin'de bulunan, Roma ordusunda subay olan, Anadolu'lu (Kappadokyalı), Aziz Georgios'tan almaktadır. Mevcut rivayetlere göre, manastır bin yılı aşan bir maziye sahip olup M.S. 963 senesinde Bizans İmparatoru Nikiforos Fokas zamanında inşa edilmiştir.
Aya Yorgi'nin mucizevi ikonası ise Büyükada'daki İmparatoriçe İrini'nin Kadınlar Manastın tarafından hediye edilmiştir. Bizans İmparatoru Manuil Komninos'un 1158 tarihli altın mühürlü fermanında ise, İstanbul Adalar ve buradaki manastırlar zikredilmekte olup, bunların arasında Kodono ismi de geçmektedir. 19. asır tarihçisi Manuil Gedeon' a göre ise, bu isim Büyükada'daki Aya Yorgi Kudunas (Çıngırakçı) Manastırı'ndan başkası değildir.
