This area is called Hünkâr Çayırı because Fatih Sultan Mehmet took a break there with his army or had his imperial tent set up there during the campaign he launched against Italy on Friday, 27 April 1481. In memory of Fatih Sultan Mehmet, who died on 3 May 1481, a fountain with an inscription was built. Hünkâr Çeşmesi was commissioned by Grand Vizier İbrahim Paşa in 1659 during the reign of IV. Mehmet and has survived to the present day with some repairs.
A monument to Fatih Sultan Mehmet was erected in front of the fountain. The fountain, also known among the public as Fatih Sebili, is the place where Fatih Sultan Mehmet had his imperial tent set up. In Hünkar Çayırı, which was rearranged in 1995 as a park, recreation and festival area, traditional wrestling festivities are held every year due to the conquest of Istanbul.
