İstanbul Oyuncak Müzesi; şair-yazar Sunay Akın tarafından kurulmuştur. Müze kapılarını 23 Nisan 2005'te ziyarete açmıştır. Müzede sergilenen oyuncaklar dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinden açık arttırmalarda edinilmiş veya antikacılardan satın alınmıştır. Müzenin açılışında bu şekilde edinilmiş 1000 civarında oyuncak varken, şu anda bu sayı 4000'e çıkmıştır. Sergilenen oyuncaklar, sanatçının sahne gösterileri, tiyatro oyunları gibi bireysel çabaları sonucu kazandıklarıyla edindiği teliflerle satın alınmıştır. Müzenin her odası bir tiyatro sahnesi görünümünde olup, sahne tasarım sanatçıcı Ayhan Doğan tarafından tasarlanmıştır. Müze 2009 yılında ICOM'a (Uluslar Arası Müzeler Birliği) üye olmuştur. Avrupa Müzeler Forumu'nun faaliyetlerine katılmaya başlamıştır. 2010 ve 2011 yıllarında ''Avrupa'nın En İyi Müzesi'' yarışmasında ödüle aday gösterilmiştir.
