14.Ocak.1850 / 10.Haziran.1923 - Yakın dönem Fransız Edebiyatı'nın önemli yazarlarından biri olan Pierre Loti istanbul yakın tarihinde de yer alan bir yazardır. 1850 yılında Fransa'nın Rochefort Kenti'nde Protestan bir ailenin en küçüğü olarak doğdu. 17 yaşında Fransız Deniz Kuvvetleri'ne girdi. Denizcilik eğitimini tamamladıktan sonra 1881'de yüzbaşı oldu ve ilerleyen yıllarda da terfi ederek albaylığa kadar yükseldi. Ortadoğu ve Uzakdoğu'da bulundu. Bir deniz subayı olarak romanlarında konu ettiği yabancı kültürünü pek çok yer gezerek tanıma fırsatını buldu. Bu yolculuklarında edindiği deneyimlerini ve gözlemlerini daha sonra kitaplarına yansıttı.
1879'da ilk romanı olan ve o dönemin Osmanlı Türkiye'sinden kesitler veren Aziyade 'nin yayınlanmasının ardından 1886'da İzlanda Balıkçısı'nı yayınladı. Loti, kendini edebiyat çevresine kabul ettirmiş bir yazar oldu. Birçok kez İstanbul'da bulunmuş olan Pierre Loti, İstanbul'a ilk kez 1876 yılında bir Fransız gemisiyle, görevli subay olarak geldi. Loti, Osmanlı yaşam biçiminden etkilendi ve pek çok eserinde bu etkiyi gösterdi. Aziyade adlı romanına adını veren kadınla burda tanıştı. İstanbul'da bulunduğu zamanlarda Eyüp'te yaşadı. İstanbul'a hayran olan Pierre Loti, kendisini her zaman Türk dostu olarak nitelendirdi. Loti 10 Haziran 1923’te Handaye’de öldü. Oleron Adası'na atalarının mezarlarının yanına gömüldü.
