Pierre Loti Kahvesi

14.January.1850 / 10.June.1923 - Pierre Loti, one of the important writers of modern French Literature, is also a writer who has a place in Istanbul's recent history. He was born in 1850 in the city of Rochefort, France, as the youngest child of a Protestant family. At the age of 17, he joined the French Navy. After completing his naval training, he became a captain in 1881, and in the following years he was promoted further, rising to the rank of colonel. He was in the Middle East and the Far East. As a naval officer, he had the opportunity to get to know the foreign cultures he dealt with in his novels by traveling to many places. He later reflected the experiences and observations he gained on these journeys in his books.

After the publication in 1879 of his first novel, Aziyade, which presented scenes from Ottoman Turkey of that period, he published Iceland Fisherman in 1886. Loti became a writer accepted by literary circles. Pierre Loti, who had been in Istanbul many times, first came to Istanbul in 1876 on a French ship as an officer on duty. Loti was influenced by the Ottoman way of life and showed this influence in many of his works. He met there the woman who gave her name to his novel Aziyade. During the times he was in Istanbul, he lived in Eyüp. Pierre Loti, who admired Istanbul, always described himself as a friend of the Turks. Loti died in Handaye on 10 June 1923. He was buried on Oleron Island next to the graves of his ancestors.
