Bulunduğu semte kendi adını veren Eyüp Camisi, İstanbul’un fethinden sonra yapılmış ilk ve en eski camilerdendir. Fatih Sultan Mehmet, Ebu-Eyyüp’un türbesinden sonra, 1458’de bu camiyi yaptırmıştır. Gerek yanındaki türbeden, gerek tahta çıkan Osmanlı hükümdarlarına burada kılıç kuşanma töreni yapılmasından dolayı Eyüp Camisi büyük önem kazanmıştır. Zamanla harap olan Eyüp Camisi’ni III. Selim yalnız minareleri kalmak üzere temellerine kadar yıktırarak yeniden ve bugünkü şekliyle yaptırdı, 1798’de başlayan yapı 1800’de tamamlandı.
