Eyüp Camisi, which gave its name to the district where it is located, is one of the first and oldest mosques built after the conquest of Istanbul. After the tomb of Ebu-Eyyüp, Fatih Sultan Mehmet had this mosque built in 1458. Eyüp Camisi gained great importance both because of the tomb next to it and because the sword-girding ceremony for Ottoman rulers ascending the throne was held here. As Eyüp Camisi fell into ruin over time, III. Selim had it demolished down to its foundations, leaving only the minarets, and rebuilt it in its present form; construction, which began in 1798, was completed in 1800.
