When Orhan Gazi took Bursa in 1326, the city consisted only of the settlement within the Fortress. A model of urbanization later adopted by subsequent Ottoman sultans was first implemented by Sultan Orhan in 1339, and outside the city walls, on the brushwood and marshy ground of the wide Gökdere bed stretching at that time from Çakır hamam to Set başı, he had a külliye built consisting of a mosque, madrasa, imaret, bath and inn (bedesten).
