It was commissioned by Hazma Bey, who served as the grand vizier of Çelebi Sultan Mehmet and was martyred in Romania, where he had gone as the envoy of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It was built as a masjid in the Fatih period, and was converted into a mosque in 1614 when a minbar was installed by kazasker Muallim Zade Ahmet Efendi. It underwent repairs due to the earthquakes that occurred in 1826 and 1854, and is the largest and most important külliye among the works built in Bursa during the Fatih period.
