Tabiat tarihi müzesi, Atatürk’ün emirleri üzerine Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Müdürlüğü’nce 1968 yılında hizmete açılmıştır. Maden Tetkik ve Arama Genel Müdürlüğü içersinde yer alan ve 4.000 m2’lik bir alan kurulmuş olan müze, 5 bölümden meydana gelmekte ve 3 kata yerleştirilmiş konumda bulunmaktadır. İlk katta, ülkemizde geçmişte yaşamış olan ve halen yaşamakta olan bitki ile hayvan örnekleri yer almaktadır. Giriş katında, 6.400 çeşide yakın fosil materyal bulunmaktadır.
