Eflatunpınar Hittite Water Monument is located within the borders of Sadıkhacı Town, Beyşehir District, Konya Province. During their approximately thousand-year period of dominance in the history of world civilization, the Hittites left various tangible cultural assets reflecting the state structure and social, economic, and religious life.
Among the most important factors in the shaping of these cultural assets are needs and beliefs. The collection of water at a center and its use according to need, thus implementing a good water regime, was an important part of the economic line in agricultural societies, and Eflatunpınar Hittite Water Monument is the finest example of this system, which has survived to the present day without losing its function after the Hittites as well. The monument is dated to the last quarter of the 13th century BC. It is thought that Eflatunpınar Monument belongs to the period of Great King Tuthaliya IV.
Distinguished from the other rock monuments of the Hittite Civilization by its original stone workmanship, the composition of the reliefs, and its arrangement as an open-air temple, Eflatunpınar Monument was not built on natural rock, but was constructed by meticulously joining andesite blocks cut to fit one another. It consists of a large pool built over a natural water source and god and goddess figures made in relief technique on rocks shaped in rectangular form.
Horizontal water channels parallel to the wall of the pool allow the water to flow into the pool, also providing important information about the water installation and water technology of the period.
In 2014, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as the Hittite Sacred Water Temple. The justification for its Outstanding Universal Value for inclusion on the list: The characteristic of the Eflatunpınar water pool is that it is one of the rare water systems in which flowing waters are collected by the central pool system and used economically when necessary. This monument is not only one of the rare monuments in terms of its appearance, arrangement, and iconographic structure, but is also a very exceptional monument in terms of the technology and craftsmanship used during its construction.
