İzmir Painting and Sculpture Museum was opened as a gallery on 9 September 1952 in the maarif velâketi building located within the Kültürpark area (designed by Bruno Taut). After painter Sadık Renkler and Ali Rıza Hiti, painter Kadri Ataman served as gallery director for ten years. In 1973, during the directorship of painter and sculptor Turgut Pura (1964-1979), the gallery moved to its award-winning building on Mithat Paşa Caddesi, designed by architects Muhlis Türkmen and İnan Göral, and also began to provide museum services.
İzmir Painting and Sculpture Museum quickly became the center of İzmir’s cultural life with the qualified events organized by Mehmet Sabır, who took office after Turgut Pura, who made great efforts to improve the existing collection. However, in order for the museum, which was damaged due to the earthquake that occurred in the region on 30 October 2020, to continue its activities, a new exhibition and arrangement order was made in its old venue in the Kültürpark area and it was opened to visitors. As of 2023, İzmir Painting and Sculpture Museum has moved to Alsancak Tekel Cigarette Factory as its new venue.
