The columns are made of juniper and Scots pine wood. In the middle of the mosque, there is an opening referred to as an “aydınlık feneri” to provide light from above.

The mosque’s wooden columns and finely crafted wooden minbar are striking.

Servet Uygun

The minbar, which contains the most exquisite example of ornamentation from Anatolian Seljuk period architecture, was made of walnut wood using the kündekari technique. A band inscribed with Ayetel Kürsi surrounds the door arch.

In the square lattice filling in the throne section, the interlacing motif formed by intersecting octagons is characteristic. It is thought that the minbar was brought from Kılıç Mescidi, which was demolished in 1924.

The mosque’s mihrab has plaster decoration. In the outermost first band surrounding the mihrab, there is script in thuluth character; in the second band, vegetal motifs consisting of grape clusters and branches; and in the third band, five- and ten-pointed star motifs formed of interlaced pentagons.

Sivrihisar Ulu Cami is one of the five mosques inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023 as the Medieval Wooden Hypostyle Mosques of Anatolia. The other mosques on the list are Ulu Cami in Afyonkarahisar, Ahi Şerafettin (Arslanhane) Camisi in Ankara, Eşrefoğlu Camisi in Konya, and Mahmut Bey Camisi in Kastamonu.
