Where is the Pessinus archaeological site?
The Ancient City of Pessinus is located in Ballıhisar, 13 kilometers south of Sivrihisar on the Ankara-Eskişehir highway. Today, Ballıhisar Village has been established on top of the ancient city, which lies on the old King's Road. The Ancient City of Pessinus is known as one of the most important places of worship of the mother goddess called "Goddess Kybele" by the Phrygians.
Pessinus hosted ceremonies held for the mother goddess and in those periods became the center for those who dedicated themselves to the mother goddess. The King's Road passing through Pessinus was also used in the Roman and Byzantine periods because it was reliable and shorter. Remains of the road can still be seen today near the ancient city.
In the Roman Period, milestone markers were used on the roads leading to Pessinus. In the Hellenistic Period, the temple in the city was repaired; the council building, stoa, canal, theater and roads were built. Excavations were carried out intermittently by Ghent University in Belgium in 1967 until 2008. Since 2009, the excavations have been continued by the University of Melbourne in Australia. Artifacts uncovered as a result of the excavations are exhibited in the Eskişehir ETİ Archaeology Museum and in the open-air museum established in Pessinus.
