The ancient city of Hierapolis, located 18 km. north of Denizli province, is referred to in archaeological literature as the “Holy City,” that is, the Sacred City, due to the presence of many known temples and other religious structures in the city. Although information about the foundation of the city is limited, it is known that it was founded by II. Eumenes, one of the Kings of Bergama, at the beginning of the II. century BC, and that it took the name Hierapolis from Hiera, the Queen of the Amazons and wife of Telephos, the legendary founder of Bergama.

Hierapolis is an ancient city and archaeological site near Pamukkale in Denizli, Turkey. Sources describe it as a Hellenistic Greek city in Phrygia, established in the 3rd century BC where an earlier Phrygian cult center of Cybele had stood, with remains beside modern Pamukkale. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage property of Hierapolis-Pamukkale.
