The Bintepeler Tumuli were built by the Lydians, who invented money, in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The largest tumulus, belonging to the famous Lydian King Alyattes II, is 355 meters in diameter, 69 meters high, and has a circumference of one thousand 115 meters. The second largest tumulus, belonging to King Gyges, is being excavated by an American team. Tumulus is the name given to hills formed by piling up earth over them, containing a grave or cemetery.
