Tarihçi Herodotos’a göre bu kabartmada betimlenen kişi Mısır kralı Sesotris’dir. Herodotos, bu kralın baş eğdirdiği ülkelerde sütunlar diktirdiğini ve bu sütunlardan Batı Anadolu kıyılarında iki tane olduğunu söyler. Bunlardan biri Fokaia ( Foça ) - Ephesos ( Efes ) yolu üzerinde, diğeri ise Sardes’ten İzmir’e giden yol üzerindedir diye ilave eder. Bu iki yerde de iki buçuk dirsek yüksekliğinde bir heykel oyulmuştur; sağ elinde bir kargı, sol elinde yay tutar; öbür donatımları da gösterilmiştir. ; Mısır karakteri taşır, göğsünde bir omzundan öbürüne, kutsal Mısır harfleriyle bir yazı kazılmıştır ve bu yazının Herodotos’a göre anlamı : “ Sesotris’in bir omuz vuruşuyla bu ülkeyi yendiğini ve aldığını “ açıklamaktadır.
