The Importance of Duatepe
It is the first hill recaptured from the enemy with the offensive launched by Commander-in-Chief Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on 10 September 1921. Duatepe is the starting point of a process with a bright end, during which the enemy was pursued until they were driven into the Aegean Sea.
Symbolically, the monument tells the story of the people of Anatolia, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, rushing like a mighty river toward victory and civilization. The figure of Mustafa Kemal on his rearing horse expresses the pride and happiness he felt in being the leader of the Turkish Nation. The statues of Atatürk, İnönü and Marshal Fevzi Çakmak in the background represent unity of command, while the statue of Halide Edip Adıvar represents the contribution of Turkish women to the War of Independence. The scene in which Atatürk and his aide watch the plain through binoculars expresses the Turkish Nation hopefully awaiting the victory that would be won shortly and the independence that would follow.
Duatepe became a symbol of Turkish perseverance and determination because Mustafa Kemal Paşa insistently continued his duty despite breaking his ribs after falling from his horse at Gazi Tepe. Of the two flags at the monument, one represents the banner of the 38'inci Regiment and the other represents the Turkish Flag. In addition, the figure of Mustafa Kemal on his rearing horse expresses the happiness and excitement that many feel while playing with their favorite toy.
