It has been determined, as a result of the excavations carried out in 1946 by Archaeologist Prof. Dr. Tahsin Özgüç, that the castle (Topraktepe), which holds an important place in the development of Sivas city center, had been inhabited since the beginning of the II. millennium BC. Seljuk Sultan Alaattin Keykubat had the walls of Sivas repaired against the approaching Mongol threat. The castle inscription describing this repair, carried out before the Kösedağ Battle between the Seljuk and Mongol armies in 1243, is preserved in Sivas Museum. The outer walls completely surrounding the city have five or seven gates. The changes in the number of gates resulted from the opening or closing of new gates during each repair. These are referred to by names such as Kayseri Kapısı, Dolap Kapı, Tokmak Kapı, Cancun Kapısı, Şalpur Kapısı, Bağdat Kapısı, Tokat Kapısı.
