It is said that Gevher Nesibe Sultan, who was stricken with an incurable illness, tuberculosis, because of the pain of love, bequeathed to her brother, ruler I. Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev, on her deathbed that a hospital be built. The Seljuk ruler fulfilled his sister’s will in 1206. It is also thought that the medical madrasa attached to the hospital was commissioned in 1213 by I. İzzettin Keykavus. The hospital, where the sound of the ney and water, which give tranquility and peace to the human soul, helped the mentally ill find healing, and the madrasa next to it, which bears the distinction of being the first practical medical school, these structures also known as Çifte Medrese are awe-inspiring with their high ceilings and fine examples of stone workmanship.
