Rivayet odur ki, aşk acısıyla amansız hastalık, vereme yakalanan Gevher Nesibe Sultan, kardeşi hükümdar I. Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev’e ölüm döşeğinde hastane yapılmasını vasiyet eder. Selçuklu Hükümdarı, kardeşinin bu vasiyetini 1206 yılında yerine getirmiş. Hastaneye ekli tıp medresesini de 1213’te I. İzzettin Keykavus tarafından yaptırıldığı düşünülmektedir. İnsan ruhuna dinginlik ve huzur veren ney ve su sesi ile akıl hastalarının şifa bulduğu hastane ve yanındaki ilk uygulamalı tıp okulu özelliğini taşıyan medrese, Çifte Medrese olarak da anılan yapılar yüksek tavanlar ve güzel taş işçiliği örnekleri ile hayranlık uyandırıcıdır.
