Bizans Döneminde önceleri –kule anlamına gelen- Pyrigion adıyla bilinen Birgi daha sonraları Christoupolis adını almıştır. Anadoluda Beylikler döneminde ise Aydınoğulları Beyliği’nin hakimiyeti altında bulunan Birgi XIII. ve XIV. yüzyıl boyunca aynı beyliğe başkentlik yapmıştır.
