These bastions, which contain headquarters buildings, military shelters, training grounds, mess halls, cisterns, and ambush rooms, sometimes consist of a single structure and sometimes of the combination of a few large structures. The most important of the bastions, whose sizes and locations vary, are the Mecidiye and Aziziye bastions located immediately to the east of the city.

While all of the bastions were built of stone, durability and practical use were emphasized rather than architectural style. The bastions, consisting of rooms side by side, were covered with a thick layer of earth. On the side opposite the direction from which the enemy would come, sections such as the soldiers' assembly courtyards, storage, and infirmary were included. In the widest section of the bastions there are barracks rooms, and these were built in a rectangular shape connected to one another. The rooms are 3-4 meters wide and 6-14.5 meters deep. Some of the barracks rooms, which are mostly single-storey, were divided into two with wooden planks and made two-storey in order to save space. These bastions (Mecidiye and Aziziye) played a critical role in stopping the Russian advance in the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War known as the "93 Harbi."
