Trabzon'un 18 kilometre batısında bulunan Akçakale, denize hakim bir terasta kurulmuştur. İlçeye ismini veren kale 1297-1330 yılları arasında İmparator Alexios II tarafından Selçuklular'dan korunmak amacıyla yaptırıldığı sanılmaktadır. Trabzon'un fethinden sonra kale Osmanlı Dönemi'nde onarım görmüştür. Moloz ve kesme taştan yapılan kalenin birçok bölümü yıkılmış olmasına rağmen yine de orijinal görünümünden pek fazla uzaklaşmamıştır. Ancak katlar arasının ahşap oluşu bu bölümlerin günümüze ulaşmasını engellemiştir.
