Because of the arches created to carry, by means of arches built in the Roman Period, the spring water that gives life to the ancient pool in Bahçeli Town, known as the Roman pool, the town took the name Kemerhisar.

From the Roman pool to the section extending into Kemerhisar Town, the arches are underground. The arches in the remaining section and up to the excavation area are above ground. Water was carried from the Roman pool to the city by the aqueducts, a large part of which are still standing. The aqueducts belong to the II-III centuries A.D. The Tyana Ruins have been placed under protection as a I, II and III degree archaeological site. Kemerhisar(Tyana), which was home to many civilizations from prehistory until the collapse of the Hittites, was known as Tuwanuwa in the Hittite period and as Tyana in Rome. Tuwanuwa was the capital of the Late Hittite Period. The famous king Warpalawa ruled in this city in 738–715 B.C. During the Roman Period, covering 30 B.C.-A.D. 395, Kemerhisar(Tyana) experienced the most important phase of its history with intensive construction. The ancient city became a large city with palaces, temples, aqueducts and residential units. Tyana’s brightest period was undoubtedly the Roman Age. In this period, it served twice as the capital of the South Cappadocia Kingdom.
