MS 4'üncü yüzyıldan 13'üncü yüzyıla kadar bölgede yoğun bir şekilde manastır hayatı yaşanmıştır. Hemen her kaya bloğunun içinde kiliseler, şapeller, yemekhaneler ve oturma mekânları mevcuttur.

Göreme Açık Hava Müzesi’nde bulunan kiliseler, iki tür teknikle boyanmıştır. Birincisi, doğrudan doğruya kaya yüzeyi düzeltilerek üzerine yapılan boyama, ikincisi ise kaya üzerine yapılan secco (tempera) ve fresco tekniği ile yapılan boyamalardır. Kilise duvar resimlerinde işlenen konular Tevrat, İncil ve Hz. İsa'nın hayatından alınmıştır.
