Elmali Kilise, located in the Göreme Open Air Museum, dates to the mid-11th century and the beginning of the 12th century. It has nine domes, four columns, a closed cross plan, and three apses. The church, whose main entrance is from the south, can be entered by means of a tunnel opened from the north.

The first decorations of Elmali Kilise are crosses and geometric motifs made directly on the wall with red paint. The scenes in the church frescoes are: Deesis, Nativity, Adoration of the Three Magi, Baptism, Raising of Lazarus, Transfiguration, Entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, Betrayal, Jesus on the Road to Golgotha, Jesus on the Cross, Burial of Jesus, Jesus' Descent into Hell, Women at the Empty Tomb, Ascension of Jesus, and depictions of saints. In addition, scenes originating from the Torah, Abraham the Prophet's Hospitality and the Burning of the Three Jewish Youths in the Furnace, were also depicted.
