18. yy’da caminin bugün bulunduğu yerde bir Mevlevi Mescidi yer almaktaydı.sonradan yıkılan bu mescidin kalıntıları üzerine,1848 yılında Hacı Osman Ağa tarafından bugünkü caminin ana binası inşa ettirilmiştir. İlk onarımı 1869’da olan yapıda ikinci esaslı onarım Mevlevi şeyhi olan Şeyh Cemal tarafından 1911 yılında yaptırılmıştır. Caminin bahçesinde, camiye adını veren ve 1470-1550 yılları arasında yaşadığı bilinen Mevlevi Şeyhi Hz. Şahidi’nin türbesi ile ilk mescidi kuran Şeyh Seyit Kemalettin’ in mezarı bulunmaktadır. Caminin iç bölümü günümüzde de dervişlerin bir zamanlar halka halinde zikir yaptıkları haliyle aynen korunmaktadır.
