Temelleri Orta Çağ’a kadar giden kale strarejik açıdan önemli bir noktada yer almaktadır. Bir süre aristokratların himayesinde idare edilen kalenin, 1198-1199 taç giyme listesinde Gülek’in Lordu olarak Smbat’ın adı geçmektedir. 1838-1939 ‘da İbrahim Paşa Osmanlı yönetimine karşı çıkardığı isyanda bu yerleşimi kısa bir süre işgal etmiştir. Kalenin kuzey ve batı duvarlarındaki işçilik 1830’lu yılların sonlarında Pozantı yakınlarındaki İbrahim Paşa tarafından yaptırılan tabyalara benzemektedir.
