Thyateira (pronounced "Tiyatira"): the ancient name of the district of Akhisar. The city was one of the most important settlements of the Lydian state and the Kingdom of Pergamon. Throughout the Roman Empire, until the Byzantine period, the city was known by this name. One of the first seven churches of Christianity established in Western Anatolia by Saint Paul is also in the city of Thyateira. Some of the remains belonging to the city of Thyateira can today be seen in the Tepe Mezarı area in the center of Akhisar.
