It is known that in various parts of Anatolia, in earlier periods, wild pigeons were raised according to a certain system to meet the need for fertilizer to be used in vineyards and gardens. Pigeon manure is considered a very valuable fertilizer in terms of the substances it contains. In the keeping of wild pigeons for fertilizer needs, certain structures were needed in order to enable the regular collection and accumulation of the manure. It can be said that there are three types of dovecotes with different architectural styles in our country. While the Cappadocia dovecotes are in the form of chambers carved into rocks, the Diyarbakır Boranhaneleri are in the form of buildings made of adobe. The dovecotes we encounter in Gesi Bağları, on the other hand, were built of stone in a form that we can call the 'tower type'. This type of dovecote is found only in Gesi Bağları in our country. The underground chamber found in the Gesi Bağları dovecotes is entirely unique to our country and constitutes an important point of distinction from similar ones abroad.
