They are located within the borders of Atabey-Harmanören (Göndürle) and belong to prehistoric periods lasting until the end of 1000 BC. Excavations and studies were carried out in 1993 by Prof. Dr. Rüçhan Arık and his team. In the excavations conducted by Prof Dr. Mehmet Özsait, the topographic plan of the pithos grave area was also prepared and 41 new pithos graves were uncovered. The mouths of the pithos graves generally open to the east and they were placed in regular rows. The mouths of most of them were closed with a second pithos. Various items from the Bronze Age, from beak-spouted jugs to terracotta spindle whorls, were left as "grave gifts."

Despite the uniformity of direction in the graves, there is no uniformity of form. It has generally been observed that no special pithos was made for burial. The dead placed inside the pithos are in the (hocker) position, with their heads generally near the mouth of the pithos and facing east. Grave gifts were generally left inside the pithoi as two or more items. Among the gifts are beak-spouted, bird-eyed jugs, small bowls and pots, stone axes, amulets, terracotta spindle whorls, bronze rings as metal finds, an object referred to in the literature as a razor but whose area of use has not yet been explained, and knob-headed needle types known as "toggle pin."
