The Selimiye Camii, a work created by Mimar Sinan at the age of 80 and described by him as “my masterpiece,” is regarded as one of the masterpieces not only of Ottoman-Turkish architectural history but also of world architectural history. The mosque, which is the symbol of Edirne and at the same time of the Ottoman Period, was commissioned by II. Selim between 1569-1575. The structure, which stands out from great distances with its four minarets, also shows through the choice of its location that Mimar Sinan was at the same time a master urban planning expert. Built of cut stone, the mosque covers an area of 1620 square meters in its interior section, and a total of 2475 square meters overall. Selimiye Camii attracts attention with its dome, which has a diameter of 31.30 meters and a height of 43.28 meters from the ground.
