From the time the Ottomans captured Artvin and its surroundings in the 16th century, the region began to become Islamized. Although in the early period some churches and monasteries were converted into mosques and used as such, from the 18th century onwards the construction of new mosques according to mosque architectural traditions began. Çarşı (Merkez) Cami was built between 1860-1861 (Hijri 1277/1278) in the center of Artvin by the people of Artvin.
