Çoruh Nehri kıyısında Artvin şehrinin girişindeki bu kale, Bagrat (Gürcü) Kralı Büyük Oşet tarafından 937’de yaptırılmıştır. Kalenin eski ismi Livana idi. Bu kalenin kalıntıları üzerine 6.. yüzyılda Osmanlılar yeni bir kale yaptırmış ve çeşitli dönemlerde de onarılmıştır. Küçük bir kale olup, kente girişi kontrol altında tutmaktadır.
