Aksaray, the Turkish-Islamic city founded by Sultan II. Kılıçarslan on the ruins of the City of Arkhelais, became the second capital of the Seljuks. II. Kılıçarslan was a great military commander, a sultan fond of fine arts and especially giving importance to reconstruction activities. In Aksaray, which he surrounded with a fortress, he had works such as a palace, caravanserai, madrasa, bath, etc. built. Sultan II. Kılıçarslan died while fighting in front of Aksaray Castle, which he had built; he was embalmed with his internal organs removed and placed in the kümbet he had built. In this tomb, the internal organs of IV. Kılıçarslan, who was strangled to death in Aksaray, are also buried. The tomb has a conical dome, and it is probable that there is a burial chamber or mummification chamber underneath.
