The Tanzimat Edict proclaimed in 1839 provided non-Muslims with the opportunity to govern themselves and to build schools and places of worship. During this period, a remarkable number of churches were built in Anatolian cities. According to the nine-line Greek inscription on the marble slab above the western door, the building was commissioned by the Greek community in 1845. In order to exhibit the archaeological riches of the region, it was decided in 1924 to establish the Adana Museum of Antiquities, and Halil Kâmil Bey, known by the nickname "Alyanak," was appointed for the museum directorship. For the museum building, Cafer Ağa Medresesi, located near Taş Köprü, was first deemed suitable. After serving for a while, the structure, which had become unusable, was demolished, and the works in the museum were moved to the Greek Church.

In 1937, when Museum Director A. Rıza Yalgan added a new section in order to present the ethnography of Çukurova, the museum, in addition to "Adana Archaeology Museum," also took the name "Ethnography Museum." Thus, A.R. Yalgan established the first open-air museum in Turkey. The building, which served as the Adana Museum from 1950 onward, functioned as a museum depot in 1972 with the opening of the Archaeology Museum and the transfer of many works to the new museum. With the restoration work in 1983, it was once again given a museum function under the name Ethnography Museum. In 2008, due to the restoration works initiated in the building by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the ethnographic works were moved to the existing Archaeology Museum. The restoration works were completed in 2015, and it was opened for service as Adana Kuruköprü Monument Museum.
