Zile ilçesi Yalınyazı köyünde yer alan Maşat Höyük ören yerinde ,1973-1984 yılları arasında yapılan kazılar sonucu ortaya çıkartılan Hitit çivi yazısı ile yazılmış tabletler Tokat tarihini aydınlatan en önemli kaynaklardan biri olmuştur.Bu tabletlerin bir bölümü halen Tokat Müzesinde sergilenmektedir.Maşat Höyük'te M.Ö. 3000 yıllarında Eski Tunç Çağı,M.Ö. 2000 yıllarında Hitit Çağı,M.Ö. 1000 yıllarında Firig Çağının yaşandığı üç dönem tespit edilmiştir.Ayrıca Höyükte Boğaz köy Hattutaş Hitit İmparatorluğuna bağlı bir uç beyinin sarayıda bulunmuştur.
