Müze faaliyetlerine 1926 yılında Anadolu Selçuklu Dönemine ait bir tıp medresesi olan Gökmedrese binasında başlamıştır. Yıllar içerisinde eser sayısı artmış, depolar yetersiz kalmaya başlamıştır.Depolarda biriken eserlerin daha sağlıklı şartlarda korunması,müzeye kazandırılan yeni eserlerin çağdaş müzecilik anlayışı çerçevesinde sergilenmesi gerekliliği,mevcut binanın restorasyona ihtiyacı olması nedeniyle Tokat Müzesi, İl merkezindeki tarihi Sulusokak’ta bulunan ve bir Osmanlı yapısı olan Arastalı Bedesten'e 3 Mart 2012 tarihinde taşınmıştır.Arastalı Bedesten olarak bilinen yapının ne zaman ve kim tarafından yapıldığı bilinmemektedir.Günümüze gelebilen kalıntılardan ve tarihi kaynaklardan 15-16.yüzyılda yapıldığı tahmin edilmektedir.
