Sinop’un 1214 yılında Anadolu Selçukluları tarafından fethedilmesinden sonra Sultan İzzeddin Keykavus’un emriyle bir iç kale yaptırılmıştır. İç kale, Sinop Kalesi’nin batı cephesinde batı surlarına paralel kuzey-güney yönünde uzanan bir sur bedeni yapılarak meydana getirilmiş ve bu surlar inşa edilirken Helenistik, Roma ve Bizans dönemine ait pek çok mimari parça (sütun, sütün başlığı kitabe vb) devşirme malzeme olarak kullanılmıştır.
