Şanlıurfadaki türbelerin en eski tarihlisi olan bu yapı, aslında dört eyvanlı kapalı Selçuklu medreseleri tarzında inşa edilmiş bir medrese yapısıdır. Doğudaki eyvanın alt kısmındaki odada Şeyh Mesut’un mezarı, eyvan içerisinde de sandukası bulunmaktadır. Şeyh Mesut, Anadolu’nun İslamlaşmasını sağlayan ve halkın mezheplerle tanışmasını sağlayan Hoca Ahmet Yesevi’nin halifelerinden biridir. Şeyh Mes’ud, Nişabur’dan Anadolu’ya gelerek halka İslamiyeti öğretmekle görevlendirilmiştir. Uzun yıllar Urfa’da Müslümanlığa hizmet etmiş evliyadandır. Yapının 100 metre kadar batısında bulunan bir sarnıcın yanındaki kaya üzerine yazılmış Arapça kitabede: "Bu sarnıc, Nişaburlu Said Hengel'in oğlu Mes‘ud tarafından 10 Receb 579 (m. 30 Ekim 1183) tarihinde oyulmuştur. Kim Allah'ı yardıma çağırırsa, Allah ona ve bütün Müslümanlara yardım ve merhamet etsin" yazılıdır.
