It is thought that this mosque was not commissioned by sultans, and that this inscription was brought here from another structure.

The inscription on the base of the minaret shows that the minaret was commissioned by Bahri Paşa in 1844 (h.1260). The minaret of the mosque, covered on top with a barrel vault, was built above the outer gate. For this reason, this mosque is popularly called the “Mosque with the Bottomless Minaret.” There is a legend about the construction of the mosque. According to the legend, while the person known as Kadıoğlu was having this mosque built, he showed the true direction of the qibla to the non-Muslim master who made a mistake in determining its mihrab. But the master did not accept it. When this conversation was repeated once or twice, Kadıoğlu touched the master’s eye with his hand. The master saw the Kaaba before him. Thereupon, it is said that the master became Muslim.
