Müzenin kurulması için ilk çalışmalara 1965 yılından itibaren Tahsinağa Kütüphanesi’nin bulunduğu yapıda müzelik eserlerin depolanmasıyla başlanmıştır. Bugünkü müze binasının inşaatına 1968’de başlanmış ve 1971 yılında bitirilerek ziyarete açılmıştır. Müze binası giriş ve bodrum kattan oluşmakta olup, giriş katta teşhir salonları bulunmaktadır. Teşhir salonlarında prehistorik dönemlerden Osmanlı dönemine kadar arkeolojik ve etnografik eserler sergilenmektedir.
