The lake is fed by waters descending from the mountains in seven branches and by abundant springs, and for this reason it does not lose this characteristic in summer or winter. It is a lake that discharges its excess water into the Mediterranean through a narrow 10-kilometer-long channel (Dalyan). If you do not have a detailed map of the surroundings in hand, while traveling around the area it can easily be confused which is the lake and which is the sea. The best clue is the lake’s reeds. The area covered by the lake, which is connected to the Mediterranean by the Dalyan Strait, is 6300 hectares. At the end of the strait there is also a small lagoon lake called Sülüngür, a mixture of fresh and salt water. This lake is the spawning ground of mullets. The seashore, meanwhile, is adorned with a very beautiful sandy beach varying between 50 and 200 meters in width and 5,5 kilometers in length. (İztuzu Beach)

The lake was separated from the sea when the mouth of the gulf was blocked by alluvium, but it has not completely broken away, as it continues to flow into the sea. The delta was formed by the alluvium of Nam Nam and Yuvarlak Çay. Those devoted to photography and non-motorized water sports will find it quite difficult to leave Köyceğiz Gölü. The surroundings of the lake offer exquisite views. A walk around the lake or a trip by car will also be very enjoyable. A boat tour on the lake is also interesting.

The small island in the lake is called Hapishane Adası in the area. The island was first used for military purposes in history, and later turned into a prison. The ruins of the castle remaining from the Genoese can be seen. It is also known in the area as Aşık Adası. According to the story told; when the families of two young people who had fallen in love with each other did not allow them to marry, they took refuge on this island. They escaped the pressure of their families but could not escape their bad fate; a huge snake bit them and they died right there. (You can also listen here to one of the 'Island and Snake' stories that are very common in Anatolia.)

Köyceğiz is a complete water paradise. Not only with its sea, its lake, the rivers feeding the lake, and the channel connecting it to the sea, but wherever you dig a few meters in the district, crystal-clear water gushes out. For this reason, it is also very suitable for agriculture. Even the scorching summer sun cannot yellow the plants that constantly receive water from below. The surroundings are encircled by mountains, and the mountains are covered with sweetgum and pine forests. The forest formed together by pine and sweetgum trees provides the region with abundant oxygen.
