Şehrin ortasında olan kalenin ilk inşa tarihi bilinmemektedir. Evliya Çelebi’ye göre: “Karamanoğlu Yakup Bey, Mut Kalesi’ni Rumların elinden almak için bir çok askerle hücum etmiş fakat askerlerinin hepsi burada şehit olduğundan buraya Darment-Darül-Mevt (Darı Mut) derler” demektedir. Daha sonra yine Karamanoğlu beylerinden İbrahim Bey bu kaleyi ele geçirerek tamamen yıktırmıştır. Kale Osmanlılar’ın eline geçtikten sonra I.
