While touring the battlefield on 31 August 1922, Atatürk sees a standard-bearer among the martyrs, buried in a pit opened by an enemy artillery shell. This blessed martyr is holding the standard upright with his arm, hardened above the soil. Moved by the scene, the Commander-in-Chief orders that this be taken as the symbol for the Martyr Soldier Monument to be built after the war.
In his speech at the foundation-laying ceremony of the monument on 30 August 1924, Atatürk said the following historic words regarding the meaning and importance carried by this monument; “There should be no doubt that the foundation of the new Turkish State, the young Turkish Republic, was strengthened here, its eternal life was crowned here. The Turkish blood shed on this field, the spirits of the martyrs flying in this sky, are the eternal guardians of our state and republic. The ‘Martyr Soldier Monument’ whose foundation we lay here will represent those spirits, together with those spirits their veteran comrades, and the self-sacrificing and heroic Turkish Nation. This Monument will remind those who cast eyes on the Turkish homeland of the fire, bayonet, courage, and the intensity in the power and will of the Turk on the day of 30 August.”
The foundation of this Monument was laid by Atatürk at Zafertepe on 30 August 1924 and it was ceremonially opened to visitors in 1927. In 1961, with Law No. 220, it was decided to move the Monument to Berberçam Tepesi, where the event took place; in 1964, with the construction of the Zafer Monument at Zafertepe, it was removed from its place and moved to Afyonkarahisar Museum, and in 1979 it was built in its current location and opened to visitors on 30 August 1979.
